Keynote speakers at this year’s professional study day have now been announced:
Professor Debbie Carrick-Sen
Florence Nightingale Foundation Professor of Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Research, University of Birmingham
Professor Debbie Carrick-Sen holds a joint appointment between University of Birmingham, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and the Florence Nightingale Foundation.
She is a qualified Nurse and Midwife. Her areas of research expertise include organisation and individual research capacity building, application of MAGNET principles in healthcare, workforce role development and maternal health with a particular interest in perinatal mental health.
She co chairs the AUKUH NMAHP Clinical Academic Role Development Group and is a member of the International Society of Reproductive and Infant Psychology Committee and National HEE Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Group.
Professor Carrick-Sen will be giving the afternoon keynote address on “Leadership within midwifery research”.

Maternal Mental Health Stream on the agenda at MMB Birmingham
When asked ‘what issues would you like most covered at future Maternity, Midwifery and Baby study days’, our audience of midwives, health visitors and allied healthcare professionals are quick to identify maternal mental health as a topic they want to hear more about.
In response, and following on from Mental Health Awareness Week, MMB Birmingham will be delivering a stream dedicated to maternal mental health through a programme of seminars and academic poster display.
Presentations will include:
- Peer support for perinatal mental illnesses
- Perinatal mental health and the role of internet enabled cognitive behavioural therapy
- Building capacity in primary care for perinatal mental health; exploring the experiences of the 3rd sector’s delivery of an early intervention
- Perinatal mental health – exploring professionals’ experiences of the referral criteria process and how this is implemented in practice
But the focus isn’t just on mental health. There are 15 different presentations to choose from, covering a wide range of topics, including:
- Pregnant then Screwed: The midwife’s role in helping pregnant women deal with workplace discrimination
- Next generation screening: Ultrasound and NIPT
- Findings from The Midland and North of England Stillbirth Study
- Making a difference to vulnerable pregnant women in Birmingham and Sandwell
- Factors affecting the emotional wellbeing of newly qualified midwives in their first year of practice?
Maternity, Midwifery & Baby Birmingham 2017 takes place on Friday 30th June 2017 at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7QU. Around 500 hundred midwives, student midwives and allied healthcare professionals are expected to attend.
