Professor Jonathan Drennan

Jonathan Drennan is Full Professor of Nursing at University College Dublin. He previously held the posts of Chair of Nursing and Health Services Research at University College Cork and Professor of Healthcare Research at the University of Southampton. Professor Drennan is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland in the general, psychiatric, learning disability and tutors’ divisions of the Register. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Nursing and an Advanced Diploma in Education Studies (University of Ulster) and Masters in Education and a PhD (University College Dublin), a Post-graduate Diploma in Statistics (Trinity College Dublin) and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Professor Drennan has worked clinically in a number of areas, including learning disability, acute psychiatry, and emergency nursing.

Professor Drennan has experience of a wide-range of research areas including: clinical research, research into higher education, evaluation of health service initiatives, older persons’ research, psychometrics and research methods and, health workforce research. He has completed a number of projects at national and European levels and has received competitive funding from a wide variety of sources including: the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the Irish Research Council for Humanities and the Social Sciences, the European Science Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, the Cochrane Collaboration, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the Health Research Board, the Irish Cancer Society, the Health Service Executive, and the European Union Horizon 2020 research programme. He has worked collaboratively on a large number of research projects at national level (Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University of Galway) and at European and International levels (King’s College London, University of Southampton, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, KU Leuven, Karolinska Institute, Technische Universität Berlin, University of Pennsylvania, University of Technology Sydney). He is currently Associate Editor on the International Journal of Nursing Studies.

Professor Drennan was also appointed to the Expert Review Body on Nursing and Midwifery by the Minister of Health, Stephen Donnelly and is one of the authors of the Report that was launched in January 2022.
