“We felt so in awe of [our midwife]… We felt that she was so special.”

We’ve all heard of ‘Continuity of Carer’ in midwifery – it is a key component of the NHS’ move towards Better Births. Not so long ago, the (private) continuity of care service Neighbourhood Midwives in Walthamstow made the news when it closed unexpectedly, to the consternation of many expectant parents.

Dr Georgina Sosa’s focus is on the more modest but equally important ambition of providing continuity of carer in labour.  Besides better outcomes for mothers and babies – fewer complications, less need for interventions and reduced infant and mother mortality – one-to-one continuity of care in labour in a midwifery-led environment increases mothers’ satisfaction with their birth experience.

See Gina Sosa’s presentation from the Northern Maternity & Midwifery Festival above.

Midwifery Festivals are free to attend, regional professional development forums for healthcare practitioners wishing to update their skills and knowledge around key issues and keep on top of revalidation requirements.

See and hear latest best practice and the most innovative new approaches for midwives and maternity professionals.
