Carmen Power is a psychologist, writer, researcher, educator and consultant on the inter-related topics of childbirth, perinatal mental health, parent-infant bonding, and infant behaviour, temperament and development. Previously a trained doula, hypnobirthing practitioner and early-years education specialist, Carmen has a PhD in Public Health exploring mothers’ experiences of childbirth and early infant temperament from both health professional and maternal perspectives. Carmen is involved in many high-profile international collaborations including with the Society for Reproductive and Infant Psychology (SRIP); TREASURE – a multidisciplinary European collaborative examining Maternal Perinatal Stress and Adverse Outcomes in the Offspring: Maximising Infants’ Development; and an ongoing collaboration about Humanising Childbirth with midwifery professors Soo Downe, Jane Sandall and Lesley Page (CBE). Carmen also carries outconsultancy work for charities such as the Parent Infant Foundation and Royal Foundation on childbirth, parent-infant bonding and infant social-emotional development. She tutors in Psychology, Education and Public Health, mentoring students from various UK universities, including London, Oxford and Cambridge. Carmen frequently presents her work at international midwifery, reproductive and infant psychology conferences and is an active member of SRIP and the World Association of Infant Mental Health (WAIMH). Her specific area of expertise is around maternal childbirth experiences and infant behavioural outcomes.
