Eleanor Healer

Eleanor Healer trained as a midwife in East London, working within a diverse and dynamic community that shaped her commitment to inclusive, rights-based and culturally safe care. She is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

She holds a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery, an LLM in Healthcare Law, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

With over 21 years of experience spanning clinical practice, education and medico-legal work, Eleanor has held senior academic roles including Head of Midwifery and programme leadership across BSc, MSc and CPD provision. Her work includes curriculum and assessment design, UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation, and contributions to national neonatal NIPE guidance.

Her professional focus is on human-rights-based and trauma-informed maternity care. She is an associate trainer with Birthrights and a consultant to Bond Solon, where she develops and delivers rights-focused and medico-legal training for maternity professionals.

Alongside her role at UWE, Eleanor works independently, providing maternity record reviews, rights-based care support and specialist lactation expertise as an IBCLC.

She is passionate about supporting midwifery students to develop confidence, competence and a strong grounding in rights-based care, preparing them for the realities of contemporary midwifery practice and enabling them to provide safe, individualised care to women and birthing people.
