Starting Well is a partnership project that aims to provide much needed and FREE 1-to-1 support to expectant mothers and children 0 to 2 ½ years of age living within:
Sandwell and West Birmingham within the following towns: Smethwick, Tipton, West Bromwich, Rowley, and Ladywood.
The wraparound maternity support service works in partnership with midwives and community organisations to support expectant parents during their pregnancy and birth to ensure the best start in life.
Murray Hall Community Trust is delivering the Starting Well Project in partnership with:
- Gateway Family Services
- West Bromwich African Caribbean Resource Centre
- Black Country YMCA
- Ileys Community Association
- Bangladesh Women’s Association
- Yemeni Community Association
- Bethel Health and Wellbeing
Commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care, the Starting Well Maternity Navigators are trained to support with:
- Early engagement with expectant mothers to encourage registration with antenatal services and support attendance of appointments
- Improvement in diets and active lifestyles for healthier pregnancies
- Improvement in parents’ emotional wellbeing and health
- Increase the uptake of mothers breastfeeding their babies
- Increase the uptake of immunisation
- Increase peer support groups, including within ethnic minority and deprived communities
- Increase parents and children accessing early years activities (Children Centres)
- Improvement in children’s speech and language development
- Increase engagement with Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP)
Starting Well will also be able to support with smoking cessation, signposting to provide food clothing and other basic necessities for mom and baby, financial difficulties etc.
