Reflecting on my experience at the All-Ireland Maternity and Midwifery Festival, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to present, alongside my friend and fellow student Sophie Murray, and our lecturers Dr. Jean Carragher and Dr. Anita Byrne. Being able to talk about the My PALS Module on stage, and let people know how useful it was in my transition from Leaving Cert to College, was an unmissable opportunity. When I look back on the past year, it is strange to think that this time last year I was getting ready to sit my state exams. Now, one year later I have gained so much knowledge about the midwifery profession and I have presented at the All-Ireland Maternity and Midwifery Festival.
From the very moment I stepped foot into The Helix in Dublin, every person I met and had the pleasure of talking with was kind to me and had a smile on their face. All of the attendees looked delighted to be there. The speakers presenting at the festival were so inspiring. Every one of them that I had the opportunity to see was captivating and all presentations were well executed.
“The festival was not only a celebration of the midwifery profession but also a learning opportunity for all.”
The festival was not only a celebration of the midwifery profession but also a learning opportunity for all. I have, like many others, I am sure, come away from the event burning to seek and learn more. I want to ask the tough questions and I want to search for the answers. The whole building radiated knowledge and information that I have yet to learn.

Presenting on stage was a massive achievement for me. Public speaking has always been a challenge for me, but I knew that I had to get over that fear and do a good job. Listening and watching the other presenters on the day motivated and encouraged me. It was very comforting to have Sophie with me as we were able to go through the experience together. Our lecturers Jean and Anita were so encouraging and supportive, and did not hesitate to spare a reassuring smile. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to join them on stage.
I’m very proud of myself for having the confidence to speak at the festival and it was an amazing event to participate in as my first year comes to a close. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be in attendance next year, and many years after that!
