Professor Andrew Weeks

Andrew Weeks is Professor of International Maternal Health Care at the University of Liverpool and an NIHR Senior Investigator. He was brought up in Kenya, but had his undergraduate and postgraduate medical training around Yorkshire (Sheffield, Leeds, Scunthorpe and Rotherham). In 2001 he returned to East Africa for 2 years as visiting lecturer in O&G at Makerere University in Uganda. In 2003 he joined the University of Liverpool as first clinical lecturer, then senior lecturer before being awarded a personal chair in 2011. He is also honorary consultant obstetrician at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, one of the UK’s largest obstetric units.

Andrew Weeks’ primary interest is improving birth outcomes for mother and baby in both high and low income settings. He has particular interests in the third stage of labour (postpartum haemorrhage, cord clamping and neonatal resuscitation), the management of labour and the development of medical technologies. He led the teams that developed devices for bedside neonatal resuscitation (LifeStart and the BabySaver), and for the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage (the PPH Butterfly). The Butterfly has been funded in 2 successive grants by the NIHR i4i fund for over £1 million. It was 2015 Innovation of the Year in the NIHR NW Coast Research and Innovations awards and finalist in the 2015 Plastics Industry Awards. A major UK randomised trial is in development to test its benefits.

Andrew has over 250 publications to his name and currently runs clinical trials in the UK and Africa, funded by the MRC and NIHR.
