Verena Wallace MBE
Senior Midwifery Advisor, Nursing and Midwifery Council
Verena has been the Senior Midwifery Adviser (Policy) at the NMC since January 2019, bringing more than 35 years of experience to the role. Her career journey has taken her through various senior positions, including the Midwifery and Children’s Nursing Officer (now the Chief Midwifery Officer (CMidO) role) in Northern Ireland (NI), being NI’s first Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer (LSAMO), jobs as Deputy Chief Nurse and Head of Midwifery, as well as working as a consultant and community midwife. Verena’s passion for public health, policy and collaborative teamwork was sparked early in her career through secondments with the Confidential Enquires (CESDI) secretariat and the Changing Childbirth Implementation Team. She holds two master’s degrees—one in advanced midwifery practice and another in health policy, practice, and financing. After training as a general nurse in Belfast, she has worked as a midwife across Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland.
