Thank you for Neil who has raised important concerns of midwives, but also those from the public. There is a shift in midwifery in the UK that is worrying. We used to be the envy of the world, but not anymore. We have an agreed set of regulatory proficiencies that aim to optimise the childbirth experience, led by Professor Renfrew. They are underpinned by evidence however, implementing care that aligns with those proficiencies and the evidence underpinning them is increasingly challenging in contemporary maternity services. It is clear from global evidence that midwifery care saves lives and improves public health. however, the voice of midwifery is becoming more and more muffled in the UK. Midwives are not always being listened to and in some instances silenced by those within organisations who are not midwives. Where are the midwives in senior positions in the NHS or in the educational institutions? If the government want to improve care for childbearing women, people and their families, then please please support, empower and enable midwives to implement evidence based midwifery care.
