At the World Health Assembly this year, 194 member states agreed unanimously to put nursing and midwifery at the centre of achieving Universal Health Coverage. It’s a first in world health. They also declared 2020 ‘the Year of the Nurse and the Year of the Midwife’ and pledged to focus efforts on midwifery and nursing training and education.
When midwives are educated to international standards and midwifery includes the provision of family planning, it can avert more than 80% of all maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
Fran McConville, Midwifery Advisor for the World Health Organisation (WHO), presents ‘Midwifery: a global update; what this means for normal birth and labour’ at the Normal Birth conference. Her inspiring presentation is an essential piece of updating viewing for all midwifery and maternity healthcare practitioners.
