The Awards recognised outstanding achievement and commitment to maternity and midwifery services over the past year across Scotland and the North East.

Siobhan is highly commended for going the extra mile as University of West of Scotland Student Society President. Siobhan is a reminder of the importance of mutual support to students both to grow and build resilience at a time when drop outs from midwifery courses is an increasing problem.

Sara and Anna developed a collaborative art exhibition to explore different ways of communication. This highlighted the importance of maternity care and brought awareness of different aspects of parenthood. An aim was to break the taboo about early loss and difficulties of breastfeeding. Their work demonstrated innovation and creativity and outward thinking.

UWS Midwifery Society committee regularly go above and beyond the stress of juggling academic work, placement, families and second jobs to provide a safe space and richer learning environment for student midwives at UWS. They are an incredible team who advocate for their peers and model leadership.

Kaye and Carrianne have developed a Care of critically ill pregnant patient course with medical colleagues. This further develops midwifery understanding and clinical skills around deterioration of maternal condition and enhanced investigations to support diagnosis and appropriate care management. A great example of multi-disciplinary team trailblazing.
