When choice is taken away empowering families when facing decisions about baby loss

Enabling expectant parents to make informed choices about pregnancy and birth has been a key concern for both parents-to-be and maternity professionals over the past few years.  For pregnant women in the UK, it seems there have never been so many options.

Sadly, when a baby dies – in utero or during birth – even the best laid plans are upended.  Steph Wild (Founder) and Chris Binnie (Trustee) from the charity Beyond Bea both have personal experience of baby loss and how the choices and how many of the choices that were available to them as the parents of living babies were taken away as soon as their child died.

In their presentation to the London Maternity & Midwifery Festival, they stressed the importance of offering bereaved parents as many choices as possible – including offering skin to skin, offering appropriate cots, discussing whether or not the mother wants to suppress her breast milk or express and donate it.
