Obesity causes problems at all stages of life – so it’s not surprising that it can have a serious effect on the success of pregnancy. Miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth are all an increased probability, as well as high blood pressure, preeclampsia, thrombosis, gestational diabetes, longer labour, and heavy bleeding after birth.
The problem is that communicating these facts to a pregnant woman with a high BMI without frightening her unduly is difficult. The risks are scary but can be mitigated with healthy eating and moderate exercise – and the support of her midwife.
Judith Cutter, Consultant Midwife at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, discusses the Healthy Pregnancy Clinic (HPC) and its success in supporting pregnant women with BMIs >30.
