“What is it about our obstetric units that is so bad for women?”

NHS England describes Evidence Based Practice as meaning that every time a health professional makes a treatment decision, that decision is based on the best available evidence as well as their clinical expertise and the patient’s preferences.

As common sense as that might sound, midwives know better than many health professionals the influence that trends and media scare-stories can have on both their patients’ demands and their own judgement. The principle of Evidence Based Practice demands that the evidence for/against a course of action is always put first.

However, as Professor Julia Sanders explained at the Wales & South West Maternity & Midwifery Festival, there are many small gaps in the research that hinder midwives’ ability to make fully informed choices. That’s why she is calling on more midwives to make research their calling.
