As we rapidly approach the time for fireworks, hot chocolate & cosy nights in for two, we have a rough idea of what the outcome of this can be and what will most likely be happening in about 9 months’ time… By all accounts, September is typically one of the busiest months of the year for many midwives so we hope you’re not too exhausted right now and wonder if you are looking forward to quieter months ahead – but does such a thing exist in the world of midwifery?
As there were 696,271 live births in England and Wales in 2016, we would guess not. Plus with work patterns that include weekends, evenings and bank holidays caring for women and their families throughout all stages of pregnancy, the ability to multitask would appear to be one of the many expectations of a midwife. And yet, according to statistics, midwives are amongst some of the happiest and most satisfied workers in the UK despite regular headlines highlighting staffing shortages, pay issues and workloads that would seem to be beyond manageable to most. (*)
It has been reported that midwives often describe their role as ‘privileged’ due to being a part of all stages of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. (**) Parents all over the UK are grateful to midwives for their contribution to pregnancy and childbirth experiences and for the significant amount of work that is undertaken to maintain and improve the quality and safety of maternity services and perinatal outcomes.
